RACE COURSE

Detailed Course Description 5.0 mile and 3.0 mile

Opening Half Mile – Both Distances

Both race distances will start together on the Pond Trail (asphalt) in front of the Fence Road playground, wind around the packet-pickup pavilion and through the finish arch heading counter-clockwise along the West Meadow Trail. At the juncture of the East and West Meadow Trails (approximately 0.25 miles), the race route bears right onto the cross-country trail inside the East Meadow Trail loop (a broad, groomed, grassy trail with minimal rocks and exposed dirt). After only about 70 yards, the cross-county trail splits. The race route will bear left and ascend higher into the night sky and join the East Mulberry Trail equestrian path. The course turns left and, in a clockwise direction, follows the horse trail loop down and across the paved East Meadow Trail loop and into the woods (on a traditional double-track trail, with exposed dirt, rocks and roots). At the 0.5 mile mark, the two races distances split.

5.0 Mile

The long-course will turn right and begin following the “shortcut” horse trail (though it’s single-track, there’s little underbrush along this trail – which offers plenty of room for passing) for about a quarter of a mile and drop back down onto the “main” double-track horse trail and turn left going counter-clockwise (downhill) on the horse trail loop. The trail will descend nearly 300 ft in elevation, cross a small stream, past the equestrian parking lot trail (on right) and briefly join the paved Carriage Trail (at approximately 1.5 miles into the race). A quick left onto the Carriage Trail, cross a small bridge, then a quick right back onto the horse trail. Continue following the horse trail (ccw) as it ascends over 200 vertical feet until the course mercifully levels out and reaches the East Mulberry Trail/ Beech Tree Trail Connector* (at approximately 2.5 miles). Turn right onto the connector. Note: Both races distances merge at the connector (the short-course approaches this same connector coming from the opposite direction along the horse trail).

*East Mulberry Trail/Beech Tree Trail Connector - is a brief (approximately 60 ft long) single-track trail that snakes between two wire fences (intended to discourage equestrian passage).

Once the connector reaches the Beech Tree Trail (a 6 ft wide concrete sidewalk/trail), the course turns right and heads downhill descending toward the Ravine Loop Trail. At the Ravine Loop Trail the two race distances split again. The long-course turns right and continues its descent into the ravine (in less than a quarter of a mile, 3 switchbacks combine to drop you further into the abyss). After crossing a curved wooden bridge, the trail changes from concrete to crushed gravel (8 ft wide) and follows along two meandering streams, at approximately the 3 mile mark, the trail briefly changes back to concrete before the race course bears right onto the Woodland Trail (a natural double-track hiking trail with minimal rocks/roots). For a mile, the course will follow the Woodland Trail (staying right at the trail's two junctions). In the event anyone goes astray along this trail, rest assured. It weaves by dozens of ancient Indian burial mounds and spiritual assurance may be at the ready.

At the 4 mile mark, the race course rejoins the Ravine Loop (and back onto an 6 ft wide concrete sidewalk/trail). The course continues (ccw) along the Ravine Loop and at the 4.5 mile mark, turns right and merges with short-course. Together both distances must claw their way up the Ravine Loop's final challenge (a test-your-spirit section of steep sidewalk), before you reach the open night sky of the West Meadow Trail. A right turn onto the paved West Meadow Trail leads to a quick, sweeping descent (staying left) through the finish arch.

3.0 Mile

The short-course runners will continue straight on the horse trail (clockwise direction) and continue descending for another half mile (crossing the paved Carriage Trail along the way). After crossing a small stream (the course's lowest point), it's time to reapy the Trail Gods with over a half-mile of steady climbing (200vertical ft) along the sweet double-track horse trail. (Careful, this is usually where the adolescent deer are known to cause mischief). After a couple of roller-coaster drops, the course levels out and soon reaches the East Mulberry Trail/Beech Tree Trail Connector* (at approximately 1.7 miles). Turn left onto the connector Note: Both race distances merge at the connector (the long-course approaches this same connector coming from the opposite direction along the horse trail).

*East Mulberry Trail/Beech Tree Trail Connector - is a brief (approximately 60 ft long) single-track trail that snakes between two wire fences (intended to discourage equestrian passage).

Once the connector reaches the Beech Tree Trail (a 6 ft wide concrete sidewalk/trail), the course turns right and heads downhill, descending toward the Ravine Loop Trail. At the Ravine Loop Trail, the two race distances split again. The shourt-course turns left and follows the twisting concrete trail, down to a stone bridge creek crossing (marking the start of another 200 ft climb), past the Ravine Lookout spur (on right) and at the 2.5 mile mark is reunited with the long-course runners. Together, both distances must claw their way up the Ravine Loop's final challenge (a test-your-spirit section of steep sidewalk), before you reach the open night sky of the West Meadow Trail. A right turn onto the paved West Meadow Trail leads to a quick, sweeping descent (staying left) through the finish arch.

This Race Course has Mounds of Opportunities (Plenty of Hills)! Please note this is a Trail Running Race... you will encounter Asphalt Trails, Grass Trails, Dirt Trails and Concrete Trails!
